1 Promotion of Africa Ownership Key Milestones Presented by Chrispin Mmanda & Daima Athman November 3, 2010

2 Strategic Issues: 3) Promote African Ownership Objectives: –1) Establish a leadership structure with deep understanding of African research issues. We hope to get the leadership buy in from Uganda meeting and concretize the group –2) Identify and solve uniquely African problems of successful research administration. We are conducting the first training workshops this year, the plan is to have interactive sessions that will bring out some of the challenges and come up with best practices for benchmarking –3) Enhance the establishment of functional offices of research support in all member institutions. Sessions for IEARDA on Friday Since the last meeting in Eldoret, 2 new IEARDA’s in EA South - South relationships between Moi-Mbarara »KEMRI- Nairobi - Moi »MuJHU – Kisumu KEMRI –4) Broaden understanding of the challenges of the Research Administrators in Africa and advance appropriate solutions.

3 Strategies / Activities –Put in place an advisory board, executive committee, subcommittees, and other governance structures composed of individuals with a deep understanding of African research issues. We request leaders in the meeting to consider joining ARAA advisory group –Hold seminars focused on uniquely African problems. 2010 meeting has a ½ day workshop on RA –Create a pathway for a training curriculum through trainings and workshops. With the knowledge gained over time, we should be able to build on a pathway for a curriculum

4 Strategies / Activities (cont’d) –Conduct a survey using a checklist for defining an optimally functional research support office. This will be performed as a part of the environmental scan –Help institutions without research administration offices through seminars and trainings to help them set up such offices. This is happening at individual institutions level –E.g. Moi – Mbarara case –More should be done at the ARAA level after we conduct the environmental scan –Conduct seminars with stakeholders. In future plans –Share information on the website and in newsletters. Website will be improved to include resources and templates. We hope to have a newsletter soon.

8 Conclusion The process of this strategic goals is on target. Working group would need volunteers to be included.
