10 WFP/IFAD VAM China Nutrition Workshop, Fiuggi, September 2001 9  Approximately 35% of children in the project area suffer from chronic malnutrition.  Small differences in the prevalence of malnutrition when the indicators are disaggregated by gender.  The malnutrition status in the two surveyed provinces are different.  Compared with rural average of 1998 in China, the malnutrition in the project area is more serious.
