5.3: Solving Addition Equations Goal #1: Solving Addition Problems Goal #2: Writing Addition Equations
2
Goal #1: Solving Addition Problems Subtraction Property of Equality In words:Subtracting the same number from both sides of the equal sign, gives us a new equation having the same solution as the original problem. In Algebra: x + a = b - a -a x = b-a
3
Steps to Follow 1. Write the original problem. 2. Box the variable. 3. Inverse operation to isolate the variable. 4. Simplify, variable should be alone. 5. Check your answer through substitution.
4
Examples n + 8 = -2 - 8 - 8 n = -10 -10 + 8 = -2 -2 = -2 1. Write the original problem. 2. Box the variable. 3. Inverse operation to isolate the variable. 4. Simplify, variable should be alone. 5. Check your answer through substitution.
5
Examples 4 = x + 9 - 9 - 5= x 4 = -5 + 9 4 = 4 1. Write the original problem. 2. Box the variable. 3. Inverse operation to isolate the variable. 4. Simplify, variable should be alone. 5. Check your answer through substitution.
6
Whiteboard Examples x + 8 = 3 - 8 -8 X = -5 -5 + 8 = 3 3 = 3 1. Write the original problem. 2. Box the variable. 3. Inverse operation to isolate the variable. 4. Simplify, variable should be alone. 5. Check your answer through substitution.
7
Whiteboard Examples n + 7 = -7 -7 -7 n = -14 -14 + 7 = -7 -7 = -7 1. Write the original problem. 2. Box the variable. 3. Inverse operation to isolate the variable. 4. Simplify, variable should be alone. 5. Check your answer through substitution.
8
Whiteboard Examples 3.4 + t = 10.5 -3.4 -3.4 t = 7.1 3.4 + 7.1 = 10.5 10.5 = 10.5 1. Write the original problem. 2. Box the variable. 3. Inverse operation to isolate the variable. 4. Simplify, variable should be alone. 5. Check your answer through substitution.
9
Whiteboard Examples 37 + k = 28 -37 -37 k = -9 37 + (-9) = 28 28 = 28 1. Write the original problem. 2. Box the variable. 3. Inverse operation to isolate the variable. 4. Simplify, variable should be alone. 5. Check your answer through substitution.
