3 Grade 9 Integrated Technologies (TTI) changed to Exploring Technologies (TIJ) Can be offered as broad-based tech (BBT) in each subject area –Course codes provided Recommendation from DRAFT curriculum document: the Grade 9 course may be adapted to focus on any one of the technological education subject areas (codes listed with charts). Students should successfully complete Exploring Technologies (TIJ1O) before attempting a Grade 9 course that is focused on a particular subject area. No EMPHASIS or multiple-credit option ½ credit option available

5 EMPHASIS courses EMPHASIS courses allow specialization in a specific sector – are identified by 3 rd character in course code – has its own course descriptor to add to the BBT course description FYI as of this date (Nov 17) no emphasis course codes nor descriptors supplied NOTE: Any Gr 11 BBT or Emphasis course within a subject area serves as a prerequisite for any Gr 12 BBT or Emphasis course within that same subject area

7 Multi-Credit Courses Maximum of 3 credits in a multi-credit course (330 hours) which can be done in increments of 55 hours Appropriate for focused programs: –OYAP, SHSM, Dual Credit Must pre-declare the # of credits at start of course –1 st credit must follow BBT philosophy (activity-based & project-driven) –2 nd and 3 rd credits are for the practice and refinement of skills and knowledge which reflect current industry practices and standards

9 Exploring Technologies 2009 Exploring Technologies TIJ1O Potential timetabling options from the curriculum document: - schools that offer courses in numerous tech areas in Gr10-12 may choose to offer more than one Exploring Technologies course, each of which covers a particular selection of subject areas. For example, “Exploring Technologies 1 (TIJ101) might cover construction tech, technological design, and green industries; TIJ1O2 might address computer tech, manufacturing tech, and transportation tech, and TIJ1O3 has communications tech, hairstyling and aesthetics, health care, and hospitality and tourism. Students select the course that best suits their interests. They may earn credit for only one such course - schools may find a “shops rounds” approach to the delivery of Exploring Technologies effective. In this approach, students focus on particular subject areas for a few weeks at a time throughout a semester (e.g., on health care for three weeks, green industries for three weeks, and so on).

31 Important Messages for Curriculum Chairs, Guidance and Admin CONCERNS: –Can’t do any new courses until Sept 2009 – then full implementation –Prerequisites are waived for next year –All SHSM course pathway approval must be changed for next year using new course codes CALENDAR: –ALL course descriptions have changed (i.e. even the T*J2O courses) –OSSD compulsory THIRD grouping is changing “to meet the Group 3 additional compulsory credit requirement, students have the choice of earning one credit for a course in technological education or computer studies or one credit for an additional course in science (Grade 11 or 12).“
