 It is a measurement of the readability of a book based on the vocabulary difficulty, sentence length, and how the sentences are put together.

 We use a test called the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI)

Noting details.

Once a Lexile measure is assigned with the SRI test, we are able to calculate a reading range appropriate for each student. A child should be able to read at 75% comprehension 50-100 points above their Lexile measure. 75% comprehension allows the reader to be challenged, but not frustrated.

A 75% reading comprehension rate encourages reading growth and progress. The Lexile Range is 100 below their SRI score and 100 above. (rounded to the nearest 50 points) Reading books below the range is good easy reading practice, but it won’t encourage growth.

Exiting 4 th grade, we would like to see your child reading in a 740-940 Lexile range. (CCSS) To be ready for college and a career, a student must be reading at 1215L or better at graduation. This standard was used to work backwards and create the ranges for each grade level.

I am requiring that your child read at least 6 books in his/her Lexile Range each 9 weeks. 3 of these books should be extended texts (chapter books). An average of the test scores on these books will be calculated for a test grade at the end of the quarter.

 I am also requiring your child to take the SRI test three times during the quarter, and a daily grade will be given for these measures.

Practice, Practice, Practice Texts that are used in class are at an “instructional” level. I am giving explanations, definitions, modeling “think aloud” strategies, pointing out text clues, etc. Students need to practice these skills independently. Students need to build internal motivation and challenge themselves.

 Content area teachers (Science/Social Studies) have expectations of grade level reading ability.  Students will be assigned reading and questions from textbooks that are above their 75% comprehension range.  Subject Area testing in High School (which must be passed to graduate) and the ACT are written at a rigorous Lexile level.

 Make sure that your child is reading at home each night.  Be aware of their Lexile Range, and make sure that most of what they read is within the range.  Get them to read anything they are interested in.
