What is it? It is a 2 weeks summer computing school open to post graduate students and research workers organized by CERN It is organized every year in a different member state This year the school was in Brunel University in Uxbridge (London) More information: https://csc.web.cern.ch/CSC/
3
Who was there? 52 students. 21 different nationalities 17 out of 52 students were coming from CERN (32%) From our group, 5 people: Alberto Resco Perez Tomasz Wolak Pablo Guerrero Rosel Massimo Paladin Andres Abad Rodriguez
4
Contents (I) All topics split in theory and practical courses Three groups of knowledge: Base technologies Data technologies Physics computing
5
Contents (II): Base technologies Virtualization Secure software Networking QoS and Performance Computer Architecture and Performance Tuning
6
Contents (III): Data technologies Storage technologies Architecture of storage systems Computer security and authentication Models and management Performance
7
Contents (IV): Physics computing General Introduction to Physics Computing Tools and Techniques for Physics Computing ROOT Technologies Data Analysis
8
Social activities Complete sport program: basketball, volleyball, squash, tennis, football, fitness and climbing Special sports day with different activities Excursions (Oxford, Bletchley Park, Windsor, London)
9
Contests and results During the practical courses there were some contests People from section were always among the first positions All of us passed the final examination Pablo Guerrero got the third best result!!!
10
Presentations There was a day for 5 minutes presentations from the students. Two people from the group submitted and were invited to do the their presentations: Alberto Resco Perez: Image segmentation in a Volunteer Computing Framework (BOINC) Andres Abad Rodriguez: Metrics definition inside software assurance process
11
Team member comments (I) Positive aspects: Program gives very good overview of what actually happens with data coming from experiments Good balance between lectures/exercises Challenging lab exercises Great opportunity for networking! Excellent organization Really good lecturers
12
Team member comments (II) Negative aspects: Time is spent dealing with things unrelated to the exercise, mainly with ROOT Topics not presented in-depth but actually cannot do more in such short time. Few information about GRID. As GRID Technologies group, we should try to have more presence in the School
