IABIN’s Ecosystem Thematic Network: A regional initiative to advance the use and integration of ecosystem information IABIN Technical Working Group Knoxville, Tennessee August 5-7, 2010 Vincent J. Abreu, ETN Coordinator
2
Create the infrastructure for a distributed network containing biodiversity, socio-economic and geospatial data relevant to the sustainability of terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems. Establish standards to allow access to information held in servers at different institutions. Implement a hemispheric system that allows cross-walks among different classification systems. Integrate ecosystem data with data provided by the other Thematic Networks. Increase the use of information in the decision making process. Objectives of the ETN
3
The ETN Standard Format The Standard Format is a template whose fields consist of attributes, variables or characteristics that describe a class within an ecosystem classification. It should be filled out for every class in each national classification and for the Reference Classification. It contains information on species and protected areas, which could provide a link to other Thematic Networks. It is the basic unit in a relational database. It has a hierarchichal structure similar to GEOSS
4
Reference Classification System Need of a common language so that the national classification systems can be related. Requirements: Global Hierarchical Integrate most relevant classification variables Flexible Agreeable with mapping
