1 Understanding Assessments Welcome to Catsfield CE School: 6 th November 2012

2 Why do we assess? We aspire to the highest standards of achievement and attainment for all to enable all children to reach their potential. Assessing and tracking children’s progress ensure we are able to do this.

3 When do we assess? All members of staff are continually assessing the children through observation, discussion, formal and informal marking. Peer and self assessment: children are taught to achieve high standards by marking work against the ‘steps to success’ and setting themselves and their friends a target for the next piece of work.

4 What do we do with our assessments? Track children’s progress Identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching and learning Use data to inform whole school trends Identify underperforming children so that we can help them reach their potential Send data to County

5 What does a ‘level’ mean? On their report your child received a number and a letter. E.g: 2C The number is their national curriculum level ranging from 1-5 in primary school The letter is where they are in that level C - has reach all of the previous level and is just starting this level B - secure at that level A - high attainment in this level

7 Finding out your child’s level. Parents’ Evening: twice a year. Formal year end report Informal conversations with your class teacher
