How does it fit with other things I’m doing and the philosophy I bring to the things I do? Create a coherent narrative synthesis Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance or look at colleagues’ dossiers Where to Start 2

3 Choose appropriate area(s) of excellence from promotions (Research/CPA/Teaching and Education) Prepare WebCV – emphasis on peer reviewed and invited work Write careful reflection statement for chosen area of excellence Letter to Chair clearly and concisely outlining your strengths and accomplishments Prepare a list of potential external and internal referees (neutral reviewers) and students, however, do not speak directly to them about your intention Pathways to Success in Promotion - Review 3

4 Can include a variety of “work”: Publications – peer reviewed journals Book or book chapter Government documents, reports Curriculum design document “Learning object” – e.g. a teaching video Websites (provide active URL) National/international level work Five Significant Scholarly Products 4

5 Innovation Impact Importance Reach As evidenced by peer review, dissemination, and/or change in practice Don’t be afraid to ask for formal feedback whenever you lecture/speak Keep detailed records > shoebox approach What the Decanal Committee Will Be Looking For 5

6 Research Creative Professional Activity (CPA) Teaching and Education Leadership/Administration (at U of T) Candidates are asked to document achievements in each applicable area You need to demonstrate “excellence” in one of the 3 and “competence as a teacher” as a minimum Sustained excellence as a teacher also works – but years of high value work – no objective number of years but the most recent have been >15/20 years Academic Performance in Four Areas 6

7 Your initial reflection and self assessment The promotions boot camp Meet with your site Chief Meet with your Division lead Meet with the Chair – spring Submit application by July 31/15 with your letter; PIC and Div letters U of T Psychiatry promotions committee meets in Fall/15 and will solicit external and internal reference letters Recommendations to Decanal Committee by Jan 16 Adjudication Spring 16 Promotions in place for July 16 Timelines for the Promotions 7

8 Thank you again for your call today. The process of putting the dossier (CPA) together was valuable for encouraging me to reflect on how my various pieces of work over the years fit together.
