1 WaG #7A – Coordinating & Correlative Conjunctions How do you connect similar items in a sentence?

2 Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about coordinating conjunctions. What writing or grammar rules can you identify?  1a – I have essays in English and History.  1b – I want to go to the game, but I have to finish my essays first.  1c – I don’t have homework in Science or P.E.

3 Coordinating Conjunctions  FANBOYS to help you remember  for  and  nor  but  or  yet  so  connect items of the same type  2+ nouns, verbs, adjectives, phrases, or COMPLETE sentences AFTER a comma

4 Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about correlative conjunctions. What writing or grammar rules can you identify?  2a – Either my mom or my dad will pick me up after school.  2b – We’d like to visit both Chicago and New York.  2c – Not onl y do I have homework, but I also have practice tonight.

5 Correlative Conjunctions  always come in pairs  both…and  either…or  neither…nor  not only…but also  whether…or  connect same kinds of items as coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS)

6 Please copy these samples into the WaG section of your notebook. Circle the conjunctions. Then identify which type they are by writing C for coordinating & COR for correlative.  Neither my brother nor my sister wants to go.  I would like to buy a new phone, but I can’t afford to.  We have visited both Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay.  Our old car is large yet economical.

7 Now add 3 of your own examples that use the following conjunctions correctly.  or  so  not only…but also *Remember that you can use them to connect nouns, verbs, adjectives, phrases, or complete sentences (AFTER a comma)

9 WaG #7B – Subordinating Conjunctions How do you include a dependent idea in a sentence?

10 Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about subordinating conjunctions. What writing or grammar rules can you identify?  1a – When I received the award, I jumped for joy.  1b – I will finish the book since I have to return it tomorrow.  1c – If you ace your test, I will take you out for dinner.

11 Subordinating Conjunctions  after  although  as  because  before  even though  if  since  unless  until  when  whenever  wherever  while  connect two ideas  1 idea is dependent on the other  the conjunction makes that clause rely on the rest of the sentence

12 Please copy these samples into the WaG section of your notebook. Circle the conjunctions.  Whenever I get a chance, I play basketball with my friends.  I have a bad grade in English because I haven’t turned in my reading forms.  I better raise my grade if I want to take a foreign language next year.
