3.  A simple sentence is one independent clause.  It expresses a complete thought.  It has one subject and one verb.

4.  Examples: Carol’s sweater is red. You and Alex need to be quiet. Ms. Goldstein did a cartwheel.

5.  A compound sentence is a sentence with 2 or more independent clauses joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction.  It will have 2 simple subjects and 2 simple predicates.

6.  Examples:  Ren planned to go to the hockey game, but he couldn’t get tickets.  Andrew loves monkeys, but he also likes lemurs.

7.  Coordinating Conjunctions are used to join together 2 independent clauses.  Examples:  F or  A nd  N or  B ut  O r  Y et  S o

8.  A complex sentence is one independent clause plus one dependent clause.  Each clause has its own subject and verb, but the dependent clause can’t stand alone.  The two clauses are joined by a subordinating conjunction.

9.  Examples: When Trey was little, he did very weird things. Alex stands at the bottom of the cliff while the climber moves up the rock.
