You are working in a group to solve a mystery. The mystery has three parts… The years are 1642 to 1660…

1. Why was there a war in England that set father against son, brother against brother?

2. Why was the king’s head cut off?

3. Why was Oliver Cromwell loved, then hated?

You must answer all three questions … …fully… … in detail … …. with as many different reasons as possible … … and in your own words.

Your answer will be a display and a presentation. Each point you make must be backed up by evidence: a quotation, maybe, or a picture. Here are some examples….

1. Why was there a war in England? One reason for the war was that people in Parliament were angry with the King because he closed them down. The evidence for this is on page 12 of ‘King’ Cromwell : “Charles sent the MPs home (closed Parliament) in 1629. MPs were angry because they thought the King should rule with the help of Parliament.”

2. Why was the king’s head cut off? There were many reasons for this. Cromwell and others did not trust King Charles. The book ‘King’ Cromwell shows Cromwell thinking on page 29: ‘Can Charles be trusted? He talked peace before but then he deceived us and started another war. He might do that again.’

3. Why was Cromwell loved, then hated? Different people loved and hated him. This cartoon was drawn in 1649 by someone who did not like Cromwell. It shows…. This 1658 drawing is by someone who liked Cromwell. We can tell this because…

By the 17 th century (1600s) kings still ruled but they also had to listen to Parliament. Members of Parliament were elected. All men who owned a lot of property could vote.

Kings had to ask the opinion of MPs before making new laws. Kings could not make new taxes without the permission of MPs in Parliament.

Most MPs were Protestant.

King Charles believed in the ‘Divine Right of Kings’. He believed that kings had a right to rule given by God.

Charles was married to a French princess.

She was Catholic.

There were problems in Scotland and Ireland…

In 1642 a war started in England. It set English against English. It was very bloody.

On the one side were the Royalists who supported King Charles the First.

On the other side were the supporters of Parliament. One of their generals was Oliver Cromwell …

Why did this war happen? There are many reasons…

1. Why was there a war in England that set father against son, brother against brother?

What do we already know? What are our ideas so far? How can we find out which ideas are right? And other possible reasons? OK – time to make the display!
