Can we change our offer around RWC to get them back involved? Touch Rugby -Huge success in Lancashire clubs -new members -club open 365 days of the year U24 university returners -What happens to players who leave for university? -Leave club for 3 years…how many return? -Host matches around 3 key periods – Sept, Xmas and Easter – keep players in the club.

14 Volunteers – What They Expect Volunteers Realistic expectations – Right role for the right person. Don’t overload them! Introductions, Support and Training. Clear role description. The personal touch, face to face or phone – Blanket e-mails don’t work. Reward and Recognition – Say “Thank You”!!

15 Player Retention Player retention – 3 types: Retaining current players through ‘drop-off zones’ in their playing pathways. Retaining lapsed players – 2010 3 rd /Colts team….where are they now? Retaining newly recruited players – How do we shape our clubs offer to keep them?

16 Opportunities - Retention Pre 16 drop out -Are your coaching sessions boring? -Are the coaches child centred? -Have you got the right people coaching in your club? Level 1 and 2 courses, CPD for coaches. 16-24 drop out -Huge numbers leaving the game? -Why does this happen at your club? -Are the coaching sessions what 17 year olds want. -Returners games, colts reunions (2010 v 2012 colts) Retiring players -What happens to players who retire? -Are they offered other roles within the club? -Vets/Touch rugby -KYBO

17 Mini’s What Children Want!!! Mini’s Primary School (5-11 years) -Fun, fun, fun -More time to play -Being with friends -More games, more competitions, less talking -More variety -Don’t shout! -Use more “cool stuff”

18 Juniors – What Kids Want Juniors Secondary (12-15 years) -Fun, but greater emphasis on learning -More ‘hands on’ coaching, demonstrations -Would like more democracy, involvement in the coaching sessions -More ‘female friendly’ -Benefits clearly identified -Improve confidence and self-efficacy -91% agreed coaching encouraged participation

19 Adults – What Players Want Adults – (Former player survey 2010) 29.6% - Improved Medical Support 19% - Flexibility to training 17.7% - Offering alternate social and non-contact playing opportunities, such as touch. 12.4% - Better quality of coaching 8% - Midweek Games 8% - Improved refereeing standards 7% - More info on how to get involved 6% - Better facilities 4.9% - Less competitive leagues

21 Opportunities - Retention Are you prepared for an influx of players? -What would 10 new U11’s players mean to your club? -Would the current coach be able manage an extra 10 players? -Are there new volunteers in each team/section that could be trained? -Would you need to train an extra volunteer to be able to referee an extra game? -Is you club coach coordinator/referee coordinator aware of these needs? Get Ready! For Rugby’s Biggest Year Level 1 courses aimed at U7’s - U12’s Level 2 courses aimed at U13’s upwards Referee courses booked on a need basis.
