2. Southwest Region  The southwest region stretched from the southwestern United States to northern Mexico.  This region was very dry and had extreme temperatures. The days were hot and the nights were cold.  The region contained mountains, flat-topped mesas, canyons, and deserts. It had very few trees or other plants.

3. How Native Americans built their Pueblos  Since this region had a hot and dry climate with very few trees for wood to build their homes, they used thick clay bricks called adobe.  They built apartment buildings that were four to five stories high.  They used ladders to move from one story to another.

4. How I built my Pueblo  I cut a shoe box into two pieces.  I spray painted the shoe box pieces with a paint that had a sandy texture like the adobe bricks used by the Native Americans.  After the paint dried I used a hot glue gun to glue the pieces together to make the apartment building.  I added sticks for the roofing and a ladder.

5. Native American tribes of the Southwest  Some of the Native Americans who lived here were nomadic, like the Apache.  Other Native American tribes like the Hopi also lived here and found ways to farm with little water.

6. Native American Culture of the Southwest Region  The hot and dry climate made it difficult to farm, but the Hopi found ways to raise crops like corn, beans, squash, and cotton with very little water.  There was a lot of clay in this region. The Hopi used the clay to make pots to store their limited water.
