2 What does “conflict” minerals mean? According to www.sourceintelligence.com conflict minerals are described as: “minerals mined in areas of armed conflict and human rights abuses, notably in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo.”www.sourceintelligence.com

3 What are conflict minerals?

4 What’s happening in the DRC? Death An estimated 5.4 million people have died because of the conflict. Rape Called the “Rape capital of the world.” As of research done in 2011: More than 400,000 women ages 15 to 49 experienced rape between 2006 and 2007 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. That is equivalent to 1,152 women raped every day, 48 women raped every hour, or four women raped every five minutes. Internally displaced Over 2 million Congolese are refugees in their own country.

5 What’s being done? In 2010 President Obama passed the Dodd-Frank Consumer Protection Act. Section 1502 talks about the international trade and use of conflict minerals. Requires companies to identify where the minerals they are using came from. About 1,200 companies are reporting where their minerals are coming from thanks to Dodd-Frank. An Estimated 12,000 companies are affected by the Dodd-Frank Act.
