CHEMISTRY— GOOD MORNING! Please take out: Naming Grid Lab notebook HW sheet Ask your partner, “How was your weekend?”
2
LEARNING TARGETS!!!!!
3
WARM UP Name the following compounds: 1. Na C 2 H 3 O 2 2. (NH 4 ) 2 S 3. FeO 4. Fe 2 O 3 5. Mg(OH) 2 Write the following formulas: 1. Sodium carbonate 2. Lithium sulfate 3. Magnesium chlorite 4. Ammonium nitrate 5. Sodium chloride Sodium acetate Ammonium sulfide Ferrous oxide or Iron (II) Oxide Ferric oxide or Iron (III) Oxide Magnesium hydroxide Na 2 CO 3 Li 2 SO 4 Mg(ClO 2 ) 2 NH 4 NO 3 NaCl
4
HW SHEET Reflection and Goals.
5
HW REVIEW Lab groups Check your answers with the key Give yourself a ½ point for every correct formula, and a ½ point for every correct name Give yourself a total (mentally) NOW! Go through and fill in the blanks with your new partner
6
RULES FOR MOLECULE NAMING 1. 1st Non-Metal normal 2. 2nd Non-Metal ends in –IDE Prefixes are used to show # of atoms Mono – 1, Di – 2, Tri – 3, Tetra – 4, Penta – 5, Hexa– 6 Mono is NEVER used with the 1st Non-Metal Mono is NEVER used with the 1st Non-Metal Ex: Carbon Dioxide = CO 2, not monocarbon dioxide
7
PRACTICE! Name it! 1.CF 4 2.NO 2 3.NO Write the formula! 1.Dicarbon difluoride 2.Sulfur monoxide 3.Phorphorus pentafluoride Check yourself… 1. Carbon tetrafluoride 2. Nitrogen dioxide (NOT MONONITROGEN!) 3. Nitrogen monoxide …before you wreck yourself! 1. C 2 F 2 2. SO 3. PF 5
8
NAMING ACIDS Acids are compounds that give off H + ions when dissolved in water In high concentrations these ions can disrupt our cell membranes and “burn” us Contains Phosphoric Acid H 3 PO 4
9
ACID FORMULAS AND NAMING Formulas always start with a Hydrogen Two types of Acids: 1) Does not contain oxygen Hydro ______ ic Acid (Blank= name of anion) HBr Hydrobromic Acid
10
ACID FORMULAS AND NAMING Notice you still have to make sure the compound is neutral! Cross the charges to make subscripts when writing the formula! H + + S 2- = H 2 S or Hydrosulfuric Acid H + and N 3- = H 3 N or Hydronitric Acid H + and NO 2 - = HNO 2 H + and NO 3 - = HNO 3
11
ACID FORMULAS AND NAMING Formulas always start with a Hydrogen 2) Does Contain Oxygen H + + a polyatomic ion Don’t use hydro–, change the ending of the polyatomic ate becomes ic ite becomes ous Ex: H + + SO 4 2- (sulfate) = H 2 SO 4 ate ic Sulfuric Acid
12
I ATE BIG AND GOT SICK, H 2 SO 4 ATE IC SULFURIC ACID TAKE A BITE YOU LITTLE WOUS H 2 SO 3 ITE OUS SULFUROUS ACID
13
NOW YOU TRY! Give the name: HCl HClO 2 HClO 3 Give formula: Phosphoric acid Hydrophosphoric Acid Hydrochloric Acid Chlorous Acid Chloric Acid H 3 PO 4 H3P H3P
14
NON-WRITTEN EXIT TASK Mentally grade yourself on the learning targets I can correctly name and write formulas for ionic compounds I can correctly name and write formulas for molecules I can correctly name and write formulas for acids
