GIF – Graphics Interchange Format Animation – Standard format for animation on the Internet. Transparency – yes Lossless compression Colors = 256 (8-bit) Most common format for: Text saved as an image Clip art, animations, icons, logos Simple diagrams, line drawings Graphics with large blocks of a single color Graphics with transparent or see-through areas Images displayed on computer screens and on websites. Animated Gif

JPEG – Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg) X Animation – No X Transparency – No High quality but larger file size than a GIF Lossy compression Colors – 16.7 M (24-bit) Commonly Used For: Desktop publishing (DTP) photographs Photographs and natural artwork Scanned images/ photographs Emailing photographs Digital camera photographs

BMP – Bitmap How many of you have created a Bitmap image? How many of you have created an image in “Paint”? If you saved a Paint graphic, you’ve created a BMP. Icons

BMP – Bitmap – FYI... The BMP is like an Adobe Illustrator file. Save the graphic as a BMP for future modification. Then, save it again as a compressed file format like GIF or JPG to use in publications and on the web. Icons

BMP - Bitmap X Animation – No X Transparency – No Uncompressed 256 colors Large file size - not well suited for transfer across the Internet or for print publications Commonly Used For: Editing raster graphics Creating icons and wallpaper On-screen display Icons

TIFF – Tagged Image File Format X Animation – No X Transparency – No Available in compressed and un-compressed formats Compressed is advised Colors – 16 M (24-bit) Commonly Used For: To store raw bitmap data by some programs and devices such as scanners High resolution printing Images used in DTP Storage container for faxes and other digital images requiring high quality (*Note* Large file sizes so it is not recommended for Internet images.)
