4. Socratic seminar questions 1. Does Steinbeck believe it’s possible to choose between good and evil? Do you? Are there characters who might change and good, or are there characters that will never be good? Why? 2. Does Steinbeck show different degrees of evil? Why? 3. What is the relationship between good/evil and wealth? 4. Who are the luckiest characters in the novel? What makes their lives better, and why? 5. How do we know if we are good or evil? Consider Cal and Aron as examples. 6. Is Steinbeck arguing that we are predestined to repeat history? 7. Explain why Steinbeck makes so many biblical references. 8. Why are there inconsistencies between what the characters say/do and what Steinbeck says directly to the reader (chapter 34, for example)?
