Indians were the first Canadians. Inuits are another important group of people in Canada. Inuits – often live in their own communities in the north, where they hunt for a living. (Eskimos) have been in Canada for over 6,000 years. province – a self-governing area within a nation, similar to a state in the U.S.

A major issue separating the British and French is their languages. Roman Catholicism – the branch of Christianity headed by the Pope in Rome Most Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border because the rest of Canada’s land is difficult to live on.

NAFTA – North American Free Trade Agreement (1994) Under this, most goods traded between U.S., Canada, and Mexico are not subject to tariffs. A tariff is a tax on goods. NAFTA’s goal is to increase trade among the 3 nations. Acid Rain – rain mixed with chemicals from the burning of coal and other fuels. The Government Canada is a parliamentary democracy. It has a national legislature called Parliament. It is made up of: 1.House of Commons: elected to office 2.Senate: members are appointed by governor general

Prime Minister – leader of Canada’s national government (same as our president) He heads both the executive and legislative branches of government. (Our president only heads executive!) The Cabinet helps him. Cabinet is made up of 30 members of the House of Commons. The Prime Minister depends on the support of Parliament to stay in office.

Commonwealth of Nations – a group of independent nations once ruled by Great Britain. They think of the British monarch, the king or queen, as the head of their government. Monarchy – any government headed by a hereditary leader, such as a queen or king. Governor General – has no power, represents the British Monarch

Arts and Recreation Canada has many different groups of people with many different artistic traditions, but they all deal with similar topics. 1.Nature and the beauty of Canada’s land 2.Ethnic identity (keeping each culture alive)

Sports and Other Activities Canada’s national sport is ice hockey. Basketball, baseball, and soccer are also popular. Calgary Stampede – an event that combines a rodeo with an agriculture fair, with Indian displays and stage shows. Canada has the world’s largest indoor shopping mall in Edmonton, Alberta. (the size of 108 football fields)
