FRACTIONS! A slight review of all 4 operations
2
OBJECTIVE Today we will review the basic operations, add, subtract, multiply and divide, of fractions! NOOOOoooo!! Not fractions!!! YES!!! FRACTIONS!!!!
3
Let’s start easy on ya ;-)
4
Multiply Fractions To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.
5
Multiply. Write in simplest form. 1212 1313 X 1212 X 1313 1 x 1 2 x 3 = Multiply the numerators Multiply the denominators = 1616
6
example 2 x 3434 3434 x 2 = 2121 3434 x Write 2 as Multiply the numerators 2121 Multiply the denominators 2 x 3 1 x 4 = 6464 = = 3232 SIMPLIFY
7
YOUR TURN 3535 1212 x 3 x 1 5 x 2 = 3 10 1) 2) 2323 x 4 2 x 4 3 x 1 2323 4141 x= == 8383
8
Simplify Before Multiplying If the numerator and denominator of either fraction have common factors, you can simplify before multiplying. THIS WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER IN THE END!!
9
Multiply Mixed Numbers Find x 4 1212 2525 Rewrite the mixed number as an improper fraction = 22 5 2525 4 1212 X 22 5 = 1 x 22 2 x 5 = 11 5 / / 1 11 = 1 x 11 1 x 5 SIMPLIFY BEFORE MULTIPLYING TO MAKE LIFE EASIER!!
10
example 5656 11 6 3535 31x x 18 5 Write mixed #’s as improper fractions 11 x 18 6 x 5 = = 33 5 3 1 / / = 11 x 3 1 x 5 (take out common factor)
11
Dividing Fractions To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal. Two numbers whose product is 1 are reciprocals. 2 3 3 2 The reciprocal of is 1 5 5 1 1 5 5 =x x= 1
12
8 ÷ 2 = 4 8 x = 4 1212 reciprocals _____ same results _____ Dividing 8 by 2 gives the same result as multiplying 8 by the reciprocal of 2, or 1212
13
Dividing fractions is simple as pie; flip the second number and multiply!
14
Divide by a Fraction Find 3434 1212 ÷ 3434 1212 3434 2121 =x ÷ Multiply by the reciprocal of, which is 2. 1212 = 3434 2121 x = 3 x 2 4 x 1 3232 = Multiply SIMPLIFY!!! = 6464
15
YOUR TURN!! 2323 5656 _.. 5656 3232 x = 5 x 3 6 x 2 = 15 12 = 5454 Multiply by the reciprocal
16
Divide by Mixed Numbers 15 1212 1 ÷ ÷ 3232 Rename 1 as an improper fraction 1212 15 2323 x = =x Multiply by the reciprocal 15 1 2323 = 15 x 2 1 x 3 = 30 3 =10 Rewrite whole #’s over 1
17
YOUR TURN!! 6 1212 5757 3 x ÷ ÷ 13 2 26 7 Rename the mixed #’s as improper fractions 13 2 7 26 Multiply by the reciprocal 7 26 13 2 x / / 1 2 Simplify before multiplying 1 x 7 2 x 2 7474 = = = = =
18
AANNDDD NOOWWW… The semi (but not really) harder part! OH NOOOOOOO!!
19
ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS!!
20
Fractions that have the same denominators are called like fractions
21
Add and Subtract like fractions 1) add/subtract numerators 2) write the result over the denominator 3) SIMPLIFY!!!
22
EXAMPLE 5959 2929 += 5 + 2 9 = 7979 9-1 10 1 10 9 10 8 10 - = = 4545 =
23
YOUR TURN!! 8989 2929 8-2 9 6969 =-= 2323 = 5858 7878 5+7 8 12 8 3232 += == 1) 2)
24
Add and Subtract unlike fractions 1) Find the LCD 2) Rewrite your fractions using the LCD. (you will now have like fractions) 3) Add/subtract the like fractions 4) SIMPLIFY
25
1212 1) + 1616 2 = 1 x 2 6 = 2 x 3 LCD= 2 x 3 = 6 1212 2) ?6?6 = = 1616 1616 Find the LCD Rewrite using the LCD = 3636 3) 3636 + 1616 = 3+1 6 4646 2323 4) SIMPLIFY Add/Subtract = EVALUATE
26
YOUR TURN!! 5656 + 7878 41 24 = LCD = 24 5656 = 20 24 21 24 7878 = 20 24 21 24 += 20+21 24 = 41 24
