 Classroom Design 1 st grade, Enon Elementary Kayla Noe March 5 th,2015 Steele’s Six Functions of the Classroom Setting

 The security and shelter function provides the physical and psychological security and comfort in the classroom. The fire escape posters and classroom rules provide the students with a feeling of being secure and protected.

 The social contact function provides interaction amongst the students and teacher while in the classroom. The teacher arranged the desks into four groups, with four students in each group. Each group has their own bins filled with extra paper, scissors, glue and other essentials.

 This function represents the students and teacher within the classroom. Anyone entering the classroom should be able to understand what the students are currently learning. This word wall not only shows where the students are in their learning, but it also represents the teacher’s spontaneous and fun personality with the fun colors and colorful border.

 The task instrumentality function is how the teacher and students get tasks done in the classroom. The work station board demonstrates where the students will go during their small group activity time.

 The pleasure function is simply decorations that make the classroom more intimate and friendly. Owls are a central theme to this classroom, so there are many owls placed all around the room. This makes the room look a little more lively and fun.

 Growth refers to anything located in the classroom that promotes cognitive development and academic achievement. This is the classroom library, the picture shows all the book baskets neatly labeled with the subjects. However, they are also organized by shelf so that the more advanced books are at the bottom and the “easy” books are on the top shelf.
