Do Now: (p703)After World War I why were many northern whites opposed to African American migration to the north? Do you believe the northern whites were justified in their feelings towards these migrant blacks? Why or why not?

The return of the Klan -The KKK originally gained power in the 1860’s. They returned around 1915 not only terrorizing African Americans, but also Catholics, Jews and immigrant groups. -KKK grew to over four million members by 1925. Describe what you see in this poster. What do you think was the purpose of this poster?

Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) Garvey was an educated man born in Jamaica who moved to New York. He supported the “back to Africa” movement. He founded the U.N.I.A – United Negro Improvement Association to promote racial unity and pride. He organized rallies and parades to build pride and confidence among the African American community.
