Back to School Night September 4, 2014

This year, your student will be practicing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in line with the Common Core State Standards. Vocabulary will be assigned weekly for SAT prep purposes. Outside reading will be expected (2 books per semester). The literature and non-fiction works that we will be studying include: “Sociology of the Leopard Man,” A Doll House, The Aeneid, Dante’s Inferno, Macbeth, and Night. Our analysis of these works will be tied to “essential questions” that are designed to help students make connections between various texts, just like they will be expected to do in college and beyond.

Overarching theme: What is the nature of humanity? What does it mean to be an individual in society? Is belonging to a group important? What is the responsibility of the individual? What takes precedence: individual rights or responsibility toward society? How do our actions impact others? How can we make a positive impact on society? Is the essence of man good or evil?

Homework is assigned on an as-needed basis (usually about three to four times per week). Late homework will ONLY be accepted the next day, and will be given 50% credit maximum. Major assignments will be accepted up to three days late, with a 10% penalty per day. Absent work is accepted without penalty provided it is turned in in a timely manner. iPods, iPhones, and other electronic devices are not permitted in class without the express permission of the teacher. They will be taken away and given to the assistant principal.

I occasionally use the school’s class/homework website to post information and upcoming assignments and I update grades on Infinite Campus on a regular basis. Should you have questions or concerns, you can email me at jleite@hartdistrict.org or call 661-298-8140 x1810.jleite@hartdistrict.org My conference period is 6th (1:00-2:00 on regular school days).
