Physics: Speed and Velocity
3
Average Speed Rate at which an object moves Units are in distance / time Ex. Meters/second, centimeters/hour
4
Units of Distance Miles (mi) Centimeters (cm) Feet (ft) Light year (Ly) Meters (m)
5
Units of Time Seconds (s) Hours (hr) Minutes (min) Years (yr)
6
Equation for Average Speed Speed = d/ t = change in distance/change in time
7
VELOCITY Velocity is speed with a direction Ex. A car is traveling 12 mph west V = d / t = change in position/ change in time
8
Uniform Motion Motion at a constant speed and direction Also called “constant velocity”
9
Instantaneous Speed Speed of an object at a particular moment or “instant” of time Ex. Reading on a speedometer
10
Graphs of Speed/ Velocity Constant velocity Slope gives you velocity
11
Speed Graphs cont’d Increasing Speed
12
d(m) t(s) A Object is not moving, speed is 0
