Measurements in Graphics & Design UNIT 8 – Introduction to Graphics and Design
3
PICAS & POINTS These measurements are used because in graphics you are required to work with units of measurements smaller than an inch.
4
PICAS & POINTS Graphics and Design uses two units of measurements Pica(P) a unit of measurement smaller than the inch Point(p) a unit of measurement smaller than the pica used in typography for example: 12pt Times New Roman
5
PICAS & POINTS
6
Line Gauge Measures type sizes and line lengths Length of strokes measured in picas If the measurement is not a whole pica, the remainder is measured in points Ex. 8.5 pica = 8 pica 6 points Weight of strokes is measured in points
7
Measuring Fonts Body-height – Ascender – the part of the lowercase letter that is above the font’s body height Descender – the part of the lowercase letter that is below the font’s body height
9
Measuring Fonts Type size differs depending on the function of the letters Display Type – 14 points or larger. Should be used for headings and titles Body Type – 12 points or smaller. Should be used for paragraphs
10
Leading (Line spacing) The amount of space between lines of type. Measured in points To determine lead, draw a base line along the bottom of the body height of the letters for two or more lines of text Measure the distance between two baselines
