Elements of A Plot

Plot (definition) Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. The plot revolves around the conflict.

1. Exposition The beginning of the story where the following are introduced: –The Main Characters Protagonist: main character or hero Antagonist: another character which causes conflict for the protagonist. – The Setting ( Where and When the story takes place.) –The main conflict ( main problem ).

2. Rising Action This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

3. Climax The climax is the point of maximum interest. It usually occurs toward the middle to end of a story. The conflict does not develop further after the climax.

4. Falling Action The characters attempt to solve the conflict.

5. Resolution The conflict is solved. The story comes to a reasonable ending.

Theme Theme- the central idea, or insight, about life or human behavior that a story reveals. If the character learns a valuable lesson, so will you. Theme is what we can learn from a story. Themes must be inferred. Themes are about the BIG world. Examples: Three Little Pigs ( Hard work pays off ) The Ugly Duckling ( Appearances aren’t everything)
