Introduction Anecdote(s)on identifying an area for research

Identifying an area for action research Can stem from a promising idea that you have heard or read about Realisation that your practice falls short of your aspirations Key questions What is happening now? How is this problematic/How is this an issue? What can I do about it?

Identifying an area for action research (Cont.) Involves recognising what is presently happening and Emphasizing on trying something out For example: a) Everybody is talking about learner centred teaching? How can we practise it in our school? b) How can I be a leader and not just an Administrator?

Individual activity Write down an idea which you might want to explore for your action research project. Why would you like to research on that area?

What is a research problem? A research problem is the situation that causes the researcher to feel apprehensive, confused and ill at ease. The problem is the aspect the researcher worries about, thinks about, wants to find a solution for.

Sources of research problem Own experience or the experience of others Scientific literature. You may read about certain findings and notice that a certain field was not covered. This could lead to a research problem Theories, specifically shortcomings in theories.

Contexts for action research 1. Enhancing Classroom Practice: Examples of AR Questions How can I improve my questioning skills? How can I improve children’s reading skills? How can I introduce class discussions in my lessons?

Does the teaching of problem-solving skills enhance children’s performance in other areas of their work? How can I manage large classrooms? Can children learn effectively in large classes?

Contexts for action research (Cont.) 3. Institutional focus Examples of AR Questions How can we enhance the motivation of our students? How can we increase participation at parents’ meetings? As a headteacher, how can I improve communication between teachers?
