8 Androgynous – having both male and female characteristics

9 Do you display more masculine, feminine or androgynous traits? The Bem Androgyny Test is a way of judging how masculine or feminine you are. Psychologist Sandra Bem (1976) believed that, based on a person’s own self-description, the extent to which s/he possess masculine or feminine traits could be determined.

10 Sandra Bem’s interpretation Bem saw androgyny to mean both highly masculine and highly feminine, as opposed to neither masculine nor feminine. She believed that it is / was, in fact, better to be androgynous in today’s society, as men and women need to be adaptable and willing to share all types of jobs, without saying that one jobs is women’s work or that another job is just for men.

11 Some Criticisms of Gender Tests Gender tests are theoretical. They are not universally accepted truths. Gender tests can be entertaining, and though they could perhaps be reliable, they are not necessarily valid. Gender test scores can often be manipulated. Subjects can read into the characteristic and tailor their responses to the gender with which they would most like to identify. Gender tests scores can be used to draw conclusions impulsively. “I got an androgynous score so I must be bi-sexual.” “‘I have strong feminine / masculine characteristics so I must be gay.”
