Nitrogen Cycle N2N2

forms of nitrogen forms of nitrogen N 2 – gas N 2 – gas 78% of our atmosphere is made of N 278% of our atmosphere is made of N 2 NH 3 – ammonia NH 3 – ammonia (activity - smell it) contained in waste contained in waste NO 2 – TOXIC gas NO 2 – TOXIC gas nitrite nitrite NO 3 – Good Stuff (fertilizer bag) NO 3 – Good Stuff (fertilizer bag) nitrate – in fertilizers for plants and algae; they absorb it and make proteins with it nitrate – in fertilizers for plants and algae; they absorb it and make proteins with it
4
Basic nitrogen cycle The nitrogen cycle works this way: Plant and animal wastes decompose and add nitrogen to the soil. Bacteria in the soil convert these forms of nitrogen into forms plants use. Plants use the nitrogen in the soil to grow. People and animals eat the plants, then animal and plant residues return nitrogen to the soil again, completing the cycle.

Bacteria does the work… Bacteria does the work… Nutrients: Nutrients: elements or compounds that are necessary for plant growth like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.nitrogenph Nitrosomonas: bacteria that converts ammonia from waste in soil/water to nitrite (NO 2 ).ammoniawaternitrite Nitrobacter: bacteria converts nitrite (NO 2 ) to nitrate (NO 3 ) a fertilizer. nitritenitrate

Vocabulary nitrogen-fixation nitrogen-fixation process of how nitrogen (N 2 ) turns into NO 3 process of how nitrogen (N 2 ) turns into NO 3 lightning, soil bacteria, bacteria in legume rootslightning, soil bacteria, bacteria in legume roots de-nitrification de-nitrification process of how NO 3 get turned back in N 2 process of how NO 3 get turned back in N 2 excretion (removal of waste) excretion (removal of waste) nitrogen is in form of NH 3 – ammonianitrogen is in form of NH 3 – ammonia kidney’s filter out NH 3kidney’s filter out NH 3 legumes (high protein plants) legumes (high protein plants) nuts, peas, alfalfa, soy, tofu, protein shakes (whey) nuts, peas, alfalfa, soy, tofu, protein shakes (whey)
7
Protein synthesis… Assimilation: when organisms build their own tissues from the proteins in the foods they eat. Various amino acids from a cow or a deer become assimilated into your flesh when you consume them.proteinamino acids
8
nitrogen in humans/animals nitrogen is in all proteins nitrogen is in all proteins meat, eggs, nuts, dairy, legumes meat, eggs, nuts, dairy, legumes flow of nitrogen flow of nitrogen we eat proteins (amino acids in steak) we eat proteins (amino acids in steak) we digest the steak we digest the steak body assimilates (makes a part of) protein body assimilates (makes a part of) protein NH 3 (ammonia) is made and released NH 3 (ammonia) is made and released we excrete waste (the leftovers-toxic) we excrete waste (the leftovers-toxic)
