19 ECOLOGICAL CRISIS Any living organism will pollute the place it lives in with its wastes if these wastes are not taken away. Today, man is polluting the air and water without which life is impossible. In Die past the problem was not serious. As a man's land became ruined, he moved to another. When there were fewer people, resources seemed unlimited. Today, there are great numbers of men and the great Resources of the past have become much smaller. Air pollution from automobiles and industry is slowly killing every big city in the world. In Los Angeles 1, for example, cars and motor cycles produce over 12,500 tons of air pollution each day. As a result, smog appears which is explained by high ozone concentrations. The problem of air pollution is made worse because the great oxygen producers of the world — trees, plants and the-ocean's plankton—arc disappearing fast. Plankton produces half of the oxygen of the planet. Plankton is easily killed by pesticides such as DDT that are brought into the oceans by rivers. If plankton dies the future of life on this planet is in serious danger. ECOLOGICAL CRISIS Any living organism will pollute the place it lives in with its wastes if these wastes are not taken away. 20 Life is impossible without clean air and unpolluted water. Today, the danger of water pollution is as serious as that of air pollution. Industrial wastes are thrown out into the world's water arteries. Almost any organic substance which gets into a lake makes food for water plants. These plants start growing very last using up deep-water oxygen needed by fish and other animal life. The lake begins to die. Under natural conditions this process of growing old may take many thousands of years. Now, with wastes in the lake's waters, it may take place in a few years. It happens because the normal balance of the ecological system is upset. Life is impossible without clean air and unpolluted water. 31 Ecological Problems Ecology is a science about nature surrounding us. The main ecological problems are: -air pollution - water pollution -soil pollution

33 Ecological Problems Many rivers and lakes nowadays are polluted with different waist products, which are very harmful for plants and animals living in them. Some species are extinct today. Water in the majority of rivers and lakes has become undrinkable. In big industrial towns and cities the air is very dirty. Sometimes people have to close the windows not to let it in. When it is not windy smog is hanging over the city and people breathe in poisonous substances. Some waist products are buried in the ground, they poison soil and make harm to the plants which grow on it.

34 Where Does Acid Rain Come from? People have leaved on the Earth for thousands of years. They tried to make their life safer, easier and more comfortable. They have built big houses, huge factories and plants, lots of different cars and machines and power stations. People have leaved on the Earth for thousands of years. 35 Why Are Trees So Important ? Trees are important because they provide a home for many other plants, and animals too. They protect the flowers which grow on the forest floor. They provide food for insects, reptiles, birds and mammals. They protect the soil from the wind and the rain. Most important of all, the forests are the lungs of the planet. Trees produce the oxygen which we breathe. If the trees die, we will, too. Trees are important because they provide a home for many other plants, and animals too.
