Problem Statement Our group is working for Middle Ages military manufacturer in Europe. Have been asked to design catapult that will throw tennis balls further than any other. For King’s safety, catapult will be operated from distance of at least four feet.
7
Background Occurring in Middle Ages (1450 A.D.) In Europe
Military manufacturer Assigned by King Needs to throw tennis ball at least 30 ft. Operate from at least four ft.
8
Customers Mr. Pritchard King
9
Scope Design, build and test a catapult Deliverables: Final report
Power Point Catapult Resources: Mr. Pritchard, Internet, and Parents of members
10
(Cont.) - Materials: Wood Screws Bungee cord Screw with hook
Tennis ball Metal and Wood Rod
11
Deliverables Technical Report Power Point Catapult
12
Brainstorming - Catapult’s function - Catapult types - Wood types
- Base types
13
Research and Generate Ideas
Function - Used during attacks - Flung giant boulders at enemies Types - Trebuchet (deals with balance) - Onager (uses wire/tension to fire arm)
14
(Cont.) Wood Types Base Types - Whitewood, oak, pine, birch and maple
- Hollow square base - Full base - A triangle base
15
Criteria and Constraints
- Throw from 4 ft. - Throw at least 30 ft. - Can’t be taller than 24” - Base can’t be more than 24 x 24” - User safety
16
Nicole’s Solution Pros+ Cons- + Trajectory angle drawn + Dimensioned
+ Parts describe what they do + Scale drawn - Hard to follow - Hard to build
