4. EVALUATING Process of judging the quality of something or someone! EXAMPLE- In the story GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS- are the characters believable OR are they hard to believe?

5. PARAPHRASING Restating an author’s idea using your own words. EXAMPLE- ORIGINAL- The cards below have serious flaws that reduce their value. PARAPHRASED- These cards have problems that make them worth less money!

6. PREDICTING Using what you already know to make a logical guess about what might happen later on! EXAMPLE- Like fortune tellers they are always predicting what might happen later on in your life!

7. SUMMARIZING Telling the main ideas of a piece of writing ; but in your own words! EXAMPLE- In the story CINDERELLA the little girl dreams of all kinds of things but her evil step sisters always put her down until her fairy god mother appears and grants her wish to send her to the ball. And before long Cinderella is living with the Prince!

8. A point by point comparison between two different things in order to clarify the less familiar of the two. Fluid is to solid as trapped is to free.

9. Two events are related as cause and effect if one brings about-or causes-the other. The event that happens first is the cause; the one that follows from it is the effect. Cause-your out of gas. Effect-your car won’t start.

10. *Chronological order is the order in which events happen in time. *In some stories and articles, events are related in chronological order. *My life is in chronological order.

11. Comparison and contrast writing explains how two main ways in which this type of writing is organized. Mice and cats compare and contrast.

12. Denotation:It’s definition in the dictionary. Connotation:Refers to ideas and feelings associated with a word in contrast to the words denotation or dictionary definition. As he grew older Shih Huang Ti became obsessed with the prospect of his own death.

13. Context clues Context clues are small words surrounding a bigger word that help find out the bigger word’s meaning. example-Bob went to the hardware store because he needed a wrench.

14. Generalization Generalization is a statement made about a group of objects, animals, or people. example- some apples are red

15. Deductive reasoning Deductive reasoning is organized text from whole to part It starts with a generalization, then adds facts which help make a conclusion

16. Inductive reasoning Inductive reasoning is organized text from certain parts to whole situations. Inductive reasoning begins by show examples of certain cases. It goes on by drawing conclusions and making a generalization.

17. Fact and opinion Fact is a true statement. Opinion is what a person thinks. Fact: Humans build houses. Opinion: All houses should be red

18. Main Idea The Main Idea is what the paragraph (or whole story is talking about. Jon got a new pig for his birthday. He liked his new pig. The main idea is that Jon got a pig that he likes.
