Invention of the calculator The first calculator was the abacus. It was invented in 2600 B.C. by the Chinese. The abacus was made from beads and wood and was used to keep track of numbers. The base of the abacus was first stabilized and several wooden poles were mounted into the base. Then colorful beads were slid on to the poles and then the top was finally added. The abacus was so helpful that it eventually spread to all parts of the world.

The Mechanical Calculator The first working mechanical calculator was invented in 1642 by Blaise Pascal.

The Abacus Today Today the abacus has evolved into the calculator. Now instead of just keeping track of numbers we can add, subtract, and even graph.

How it has Changed The calculator was first made of wood and beads and then later involved into electronic calculators made of metal. Now we have hand-held calculators made of plastic.

Effects on Society Homework and just about everything else is changed by the birth of the calculator. Most people can’t calculate large sums in their heads. Life is a lot easier and so is work.
