When? May 14,1804 Expedition began August 20,1804 Sgt. Charles Floyd dies and to honor him they named the hills and rivers after him Late July,1805 The expedition reaches the three forks of the Missouri River Fall,1806.The expedition reaches home.

Lewis & Clark (Leaders) Thomas Jefferson (President) York (The slave) Seaman (Lewis’s pet dog), Pierre Cruzatte (A private river man, expert fiddle player) John Ordway (Sergeant Journal writer) George Drouilliard (Interpreter, hunter, skilled woodsman) Privates Joseph & Reubin (Hard-working Kentucky men) John Shields (Private, oldest of the party at 35, also blacksmith, and gemsmith) George Shaman (Private, youngest of the party, at 16) The Oto Tribe The Shoshone Tribe

Where? They had to go west following the Missouri River They had to travel through the Bitterroot Mountains They traveled toward the Pacific Ocean They traveled back to the President

What? They traveled in a 55-foot-long keelboat and two smaller pirogues

Why? Thomas Jefferson told Lewis & Clark to map the rivers, make friends with the natives, open west to trade, and look for the Northwest Passage.
