2. John’s Gospel We have been looking at John’s Gospel in order to see who Jesus is. We have been using John 1 as a description of Jesus, which is then expanded in the rest of the Gospel. 4. The Pool of Bethesda vv1-14, the lame man at the Pool of Bethesda -Bethesda = house of mercy Why did Jesus go there? The 1st sign, Ch2, says “see water, expect change” Ch3 born of water, Ch4 water brings life Ch5 v7 stirred water, God is doing something -Gen 1:2, 1 John 1:1-5 Verse 4 is missing Why did people get well? -faith in God (see Acts 5 & 19, James 5) Dr. Adrian Todd - www.gatewaychurch.org.uk www.gatewaychurch.org.uk

Wholeness & Rising Jesus asks, “Do you want to get well?” well = whole (physically, mentally, spiritually), Shalom peace “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.” -get up, arise, be resurrected, come back to life (v21, the Father raises the dead and gives them life) -walk, go about living -v14 do not sin any more see (Mark 2 and Ch9) -Do we get interrupted ? 6. Truly, truly (vv19-30) Jesus tells us about Himself vv 19 & 30 Starts and ends with, I can do nothing on my own (vv 20-23 expands the relationship) v24 words of eternal life, He is THE Word (1:1, 1:4,1:12) vv25-29 I am the source of Life v30 I do not seek my own will, but the will of Him who sent me (4:34 food) Dr. Adrian Todd - www.gatewaychurch.org.uk www.gatewaychurch.org.uk

All the way through John so far the Jewish authorities have been wanting proof, evidence. They sent to John the Baptist (1:19) They think they are judging Jesus -But He is the One who will judge them 1:6-9 Jesus is “the light which enlightens every man” -Light shows things up for what they are

God is doing “His WORD” (vv38-47) This is not really about the scripture It is about recognising Jesus for who He is They did not receive Jesus (1:5 & 11) They could have received “grace upon grace” (1:16) Moses gave the Law, Jesus gave fullness, grace and truth (1:17, Philip 1:45) Reading God’s written word deepens our understanding (in mind & spirit) of the Person who is THE Word. 9. What is God doing in us? He is doing -resurrection; raising up to new life -wholeness; new creation -judgement; so we might know what is truth -Jesus; that we might be like Him Let us look diligently to see what God is wanting to do in us, -and then cooperate by joining in.
