5 Declaration of Independence After the French and Indian War the British gov’t was in a lot of debt to pay it off they imposed new taxes on the colonists Anger in the colonies led to the American Revolutionary War In 1776, representatives began discussing independence from Britain The Declaration of Independence was written to separate from Great Britain

July 4 th, 1776 Declaration of Independence issued Thomas Jefferson wrote most Purpose To state why the colonists wanted to leave British rule Government’s job was to protect citizens’ unalienable rights Rights that cannot be taken away by the government Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness
