The Water Planet Chapter 2 Section 1
2
Water Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface Examples: Streams, Rivers, Lakes, Seas, Oceans, Water Vapor, Glaciers, and the Human Body
3
Human Body The human body is about 60% water
4
Water Vapor Water in the form of gas The earths atmosphere holds water vapor
5
The Water Cycle Water goes from the bodies of water, to the air, to the ground and finally back to the bodies of water again. Water moves constantly
6
The Water Cycle
7
Evaporation The sun’s heat turns liquid water into water vapor, also called humidity. Warm air hold more humidity than cool air. As a result two process occur known as: condensation and precipitation
8
Condensation Because cool air loses its ability to hold humidity, the water vapor changes back into a liquid
9
Precipitation Tiny droplets of water come together to form clouds. The water returns to the earth’s surface Examples: Rain, Snow, Sleet, Hail
10
Water Resources:
11
1) Freshwater Only about 2% of the water on the earth’s surface is freshwater 80% of that freshwater is frozen in the form of glaciers.
12
Glaciers Giant sheets of ice
13
2) Salt Water 98% of the earth’s water is salt water. All Oceans 4 Major Oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic
