Remote Access Education through the use of a PC Notes Taker Prepared by: Lehlohonolo Mohasi and Mxolisi Zimu
2
Introduction Every child entitled to education. Gift hindered by shortage of teachers. According to ActionAid International, SA has a shortage of teachers (35 000 by 2008). ICT initiative in e-Education to solve this problem.
3
Purpose of the Project Open up new learning opportunities + access to educational resources. Enhance the quality of learning and teaching. Provide unlimited opportunities for growth and development. Communication between learners and teachers at home.
4
Description of the Application (1) What is a Remote Access PC Notes Taker? –A program that enables remote communication between 2 or more parties over the Internet. –Communication is achieved through the use of a digital pen.
5
Description of the Application (2) A PC Notes Taker developed by Pegasus Technologies. Captures handwritten notes, drawings or sketches. Easy to use - install software, connect to PC, attach base clip to ordinary paper and start writing. Uses ultrasonic & infrared sensory system.
6
How the Application Works (1) Server Solve: x 7 * x -5 x 7 * x -5 = = x (7 -5 ) = x 2 Client 1: Student Student notepad Solve: x 7 * x -5 x 7 * x -5 = = x (7 -5 ) = x 2 Client 2: Teacher Teacher notepad
7
How the Application Works (2) Similar to chat programs though there are advantageous differences: –Real-time –Pen input using own handwriting Two or more clients connected to the server. Post office analogy Demo (Rm 4.40)
8
Tests done over the Internet (1) Application works on any internet access mode. Tests done on broadband vs cellular internet indicated the following: –GPRS is a technology for cellular network. –GPRS uses unused slots in a cellphone. –Data download faster than upload.
9
Tests done over the Internet (2) Data speed on cellular network is determined by the following: –Timeslot capability of the handset –Quality of signal –Coverage –How busy the network is
10
Tests done over the Internet (3) Internet access through cellular technology improving. Example: EDGE is broaching broadband speeds in select metro areas. New high speed technologies: HSCSD (max. 57.6 kbps), EDGE (max. 384 kbps).
11
Conclusion Teachers/tutors will remotely communicate with learners to solve school problems. The ultimate goal is to engage learners more in their school work and promote sustained learning. Broadband is best to use. GPRS data speed is unpredictable. GPRS best used during off-peak times.
12
Further Work Integration with Skype for both visual and audio feedback. Ability to invite other clients (students) and work in a group. Refresh without reconnecting, save work, attach and email.
