7. The Open Field System Most villagers had at least a few strips of land The villagers were self- sufficient since they grew enough food for themselves. Farmers wasted a lot of time travelling to their scattered strips of land If the farmer did not weed his crops properly this would affect his neighbours as well There was little point in buying expensive machinery for such small strips of land All farming equipment needed was made by local traders At all times one third of the land was left fallow Paths and wasteland which separated strip of land could have been used for growing crops Everyone had to grow the same crops Animals were killed in winter since there was no fodder in the winter All villagers had the right to graze animals on the common land Farmers worked together and farming communities were close knit Scattered strips of land meant that every farmer had a fair share of good and bad land Diseased animals grazing on the common land could easily affect healthy animals Reasons to keep the Open field system Reasons to get rid of the Open field system
