3 Basic Concepts Livelihood refers to a person’s "means of securing the basic necessities of life – i.e. food, water, shelter and clothing. A person can either seek employment (and be paid a wage on a regular basis), practice his /her profession (self-employed); or start an income generating project/small business (microenterprise). The livelihood has to be sustainable for a person to move beyond subsistence and address other dimensions of poverty (e.g. vulnerability, social exclusion)
