28 July 2006 CERN REU Status Report 2 Lindsey Gray, University of Florida Project Summary RCT Online Software –The Regional Calorimeter Trigger identifies possible jets and E/Gamma events in the ECAL and HCAL of CMS. –Adapt a Trigger Supervisor Cell to the needs of the Regional Calorimeter Trigger. –Currently in the final stages of debugging, pending access to the electronics. Global Calorimeter Trigger integration tests ongoing at the moment. New project assigned in the mean time. Higgs Study –Studying the Higgs to W+W- channel with one W going to two quarks, and the other going to a muon and muon neutrino. Using Pythia for generation. CMSSW 0.8.0 for simulation and reconstruction. –Integrating with the U of Wisconsin physics group to speed up study. I know very little of CMS beyond the muon endcaps.

28 July 2006 CERN REU Status Report 3 Lindsey Gray, University of Florida Higgs Study Current Status Currently working on refining isolation cuts for muons and jets using a 10000 event sample. Muon isolation has to be done using the L1 CSC Track Finder emulator. Proper muon reconstruction is not even available yet. Even at L1, one can place very tight isolation cuts on muons without significant signal loss. Using the L1 Track Finder emulator in its current state limits my study to the Eta range of 1 < | eta | < 2.5. Jet isolation and matching is done using reconstructed jet and track candidates. Current working on developing the proper cuts to remove background and correctly match a track to a jet in the calorimeter. Using E/P and Delta R cuts to try and screen out tracks that are too far away from the jet or are not high enough momentum to be low mass relativistic particles.

28 July 2006 CERN REU Status Report 4 Lindsey Gray, University of Florida Initial CSC to Tracker Eta and Phi Resolution These plots include all Tk Tracks in the event. Very large resolution degradation due to lack of muon isolation cut. How do we clean this up? –Using a Delta R cut. Signal

28 July 2006 CERN REU Status Report 5 Lindsey Gray, University of Florida Delta R between L1 CSC Tracks and Tk Tracks “Delta R” measures the eta-phi distance between two points. Nearly always used as a first step in making isolation cuts. In the case of muons, we can place very strict cuts on the Delta R between the track coordinates in the muon endcap and the outer coordinated measured in the tracker.

28 July 2006 CERN REU Status Report 6 Lindsey Gray, University of Florida CSC Track Position Resolution after Delta R Cut. Using a Delta R cut of.12 there is a profound effect on the resolution plots seen earlier. Also the Pt measurement of the muon starts to yield more signal
