When Mission was Built (Founded) San Diego De Alcala was officially founded on July 16,1769. It’s known as The Mother of the Alta Missions.

Mission Site It was originally located in a location called Cosoy. Its current location is 10818 San Diego Mission Road.

Father Junipero Serra Father Serra was born on November 24,1713. Father Serra started the mission system. He died at the age of 70. He died on August 28,1784.

Founder of Mission The founder of this mission was Father Junipero Serra. This was the first mission he built.

Mission Layout and Bell Tower

Agriculture and Livestock In 1773 it had a total of 245 animals. In 1822 it had over 30,000 animals. Over the years 1782- 1832 it produced 259,545 bushels of wheat. They planted barley, corn, beans, peas, lentils, garbanzos, broac beans.

Indians Joining this Mission The Indians weren’t friendly in the beginning. The Indians who joined the mission were called the Tipai Ipai. In 1797 there were 565 Indians added to the mission. The Indians were given new clothes each year.

Population The average population was 1,500 in its peak years.(1797-1831) The highest population was 1,824 in 1824.

Significant Events The mission was destroyed in an Indian attack in November 1775. One of the missionaries and two others got killed. In 1941 the mission once again became a parish church. On June 8,1846 Mission San Diego De Alcala was given to Santiago Arguello.

Current Use of the Mission Today the mission is still an active parish church serving the busy city of San Diego. Today the mission is referred to as the Mission Basilica San Diego De Alcala.

What I Liked Best The best thing I liked about the mission is that it was the first one officially founded.
