A particular geological situation Rome is situated at the foot of the small mountains (around 1200 meter high) called “Castelli”. This area had been inhabited even before Rome was founded! The hills we see from a distance are old volcanoes, whose calderas have got filled up with rain water and have become lakes: Lake Albano, Lake Nemi, Lake Bracciano were all former volcanoes.

Proofs of volcanic activities Even if the volcanos are long extinguished, some traces remain of this geological activity: The rich mineral springs surronding the city, highly appreciated for centuries and still exploited today.

The mineral waters of Rome come from deep reservoirs, protected and pristine. Every water is unique for its particular stories and for its particular flavour.

According to a Roman legend, Numa Pompilius, one of Rome Seven Kings, had fallen in love with the Nymph Egeria, expert of both human behavior and divine mysteries. He often visited her to search for good advice. When the king died, the nymph took refuged in the Aricina Grove, where the Goddess Diana lived. She transformed Egeria into a flowing spring which the Romans considered sacred. Brides went there to perform rituals and they prayed the goddess to make them fertile.

The source is in the park of Appia Antica. The water is rich in calcium salts, magnesium salts, potassium salts and fluoride salts. They are necessary to metabolism, to fight tiredness, for the good functioning of the muscles and for the teeth. The Egeria water is indicated in particular for sportive people.

Water Claudia is a naturally sparkling mineral water, which is precious for the digestive process. The water flows from termal springs named after the Emperor Claudius, in Anguillara Sabazia, not far from the Bracciano Lake of volcanic origins. Its properties are famous from the Roman period. The archeological complex was discovered in 1934 and the villa is very important today. Around the villa the vegetation is rich and luxuriant, thanks to the water present into the soil.

This sweet mineral water is produced really near our school, in fact we can find the spring along the street laurentina and this spring gives the name to the new area “Fonte Laurentina” where some of us live. Still today people go to the spring and fill bottles with free mineral water.

Other famous mineral spring located around Rome: Acqua Appia Acqua Capannelle Acqua di Fiuggi Acqua Cottorella Acqua Sacra Acqua di Nepi Come and tast millenniums of history in a glass of water!
