2
Understand the value of organization in the learning process Discover what the role of the tutor is in developing organizational skills Learn techniques to improve students organizational skills
3
Students often find their lives becoming more demanding with each passing day Students may become anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed with deadlines and obligations The key to these problems is organization
4
Everyone! Tutees need to be organized in order to keep up with the speed of college life Tutors should be organized Many tutors are students as well Tutors cannot help students organize their lives until they organize their own (Good student role model)
5
Start with time management Have the student document how much time they spend doing schoolwork, watching t.v., sleeping, and other activities Organized time is important for organization in specific classes and at home
6
As with assertiveness, organization is a skill that must be exercised in all parts of one’s life If organization only happens for classes and home life is cluttered it may eventually carry over into your school career By not being organized with one’s time at home, problems may occur in completing assignments for the student’s classes
7
List all the assignments for the class and their due dates, based on the syllabus Estimate the time needed to finish each assignment Use information gathered from previous students or personal experience (be realistic)
8
Set up a detailed schedule for each day at least one week in advance (include study times, class times, and other commitments) Create a list of goals for the week and try to meet all those goals before the next week
9
Use a large Master Calendar to write down appointments, deadlines, and other major events Establish daily routines Put important materials in one place
10
Set aside a time each week to sort out clutter Eat, sleep, and exercise regularly Be reasonably flexible Adapt to changes that must be made due to to unpredictable circumstances but do not let this become a habit
11
Tutors should model organizational skills for others and help tutees find ways of reducing clutter and stress in their educational endeavors This will help students to meet goals and deadlines, thus improving their self esteem and overall performance in school
12
Organization skills are important for tutees and the tutors These skills are useful for classes and at home Organization includes; setting goals, having a detailed schedule, establishing a daily routine, listing all activities and assignments
13
What are some things you do to stay organized? As a tutor have you ever encountered tutees who were not very organized? What did you say or do? What would you say or do now?
