4 Geography The total area in Spain is 194,897 square miles. It is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union. Back

5 Geography 2 The Terrain is large, flat to dissected plateau surrounded by rugged hills. There Natural Resources are….. coal, lignite, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, uranium, tungsten, mercury, pyrites, magnesite, fluorspar, gypsum, sepiolite, kaolin, potash, hydropower,they have arable land too. 6 Geography 3 Spain occupies about 85 percent of the Iberian Peninsula and is surrounded by water for about 88 percent of its periphery. The Mediterranean, the pacific, and the Contrarian sea all border Spain. Back

7 People The population in Spain is 40,525,002 people. In Madrid the capital there is 5,130,000 people in the metro area. Barcelona, has 1,528,800 people because of it’s tourism. Life expectations for women are about 83 years old. Men live to be about 76. The births and deaths occur about every 1,000 people. Back

8 People 2 The head of the state is King Julian Carlos. The prime minister is Jose Luis’ Rodriguez Zapatero. Back

9 People 3 The language that the people speak are Castilian Spanish which is the official language. It also is the second most spoken language. Back

10 Religion The chief religion is Roman Catholic which is 94%. The percentage for Muslims is growing. Back

11 Economy The budget that Spain makes is 17.5 billion dollars. Finance dollars is Euro’s.68 is equal to $1.00 in U.S.A. The government type is a constitutional monarchy. There are lot’s of economy industries. Back

12 Traditions In 2004 Barcelona declared itself an anti- bullfighting city, because of the bulls death. A myth in 1628 has it that a lizard of Jaen eats the local village people if they go to the local fountains. So every year they celebrate the knight who scared it away. Back

13 Fun Fact Hot Chocolate in Spain is served very thick and very chocolaty – almost like warm pudding! Spain has over 8,000 kilometers of beaches. Back

14 Holidays Spain has many of the same holidays as us. One of there unique holidays is on October 31 it’s called the Day of the Dead where they commemorate there dead loved ones Back

16 Formula 1 They also have a sport called Formula 1. It’s basically drag racing. It’s a dangerous sport it’s just as bad as bull fighting. Back

17 Football Football is more than just a sport for the Spanish people it’s {a way of life} as some say. Football is not the American sport that you think of it’s like soccer here, but “football” there. Back

18 Bullfighting Bullfighting is one of the best loved, and a national sport. origins back to 711 A.D People watching- it adds up to about 1 million every year Back

19 Current Issues Like many other places a current issue is unemployment. They have laws that they want to have just like us. Back

20 Famous Food They have lot’s of traditional dishes such as Basque cake a easy to make dessert. Flan is like a rice pudding and crembule, but without the rice. Back

21 Festivals Spain has the world’s biggest food fight ever 30,000 people throw tomato’s all around Spain!, it’s called La Tomatina. Celebration of the patron Saint of Spain. Fireworks, parades, televised mass, and it’s a National holiday. It’s called Dia de Santiago Back

22 Education They have 6 hours of school like us, and go to school 5 days of the week. There classes are based on there age Pre-school - 3 to 5 years of age Primary School - six years of schooling - 6 to 11 years of age Compulsory Secondary Education four years of schooling - 12 to 15 years of age Post-Compulsory Schooling two years of schooling - 16 and 17 years of age Back
