2 Chapter 9 Lesson 1  Mental Disorder is an illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, of a person.

3 It is estimated that 20% of the US population (54 million) are affected by some type of mental disorder.  What is a stigma?

4  A stigma is a negative label or mark of shame.

5  40% of the homeless in the US have some type of mental disorder.  Functional disorder – mainly caused by disturbing events in childhood  Ex. Car Accident (King Family)

6 Types of disorders Anxiety Phobia Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Panic Disorder Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Mood Disorder Clinical Disorder (depression) Bipolar Disorder Eating Disorder Conduct Disorder Schizophrenia Personality disorder

7  Anxiety Disorder - a condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control

8  Phobia – a strong and irrational fear of something specific  Ex. Such as dogs, places, heights,etc.

10  Post traumatic stress disorder – a condition that may develop after exposure to a terrifying event that threatened or caused physical harm  Ex. Car accident, Being in the military

11  Mood disorders – an illness often with an organic cause that involves mood extremes that interfere with everyday living

12  Clinical depression – depression that doesn’t go away

13  Bipolar disorder – extreme mood changes filled with highs and lows

14  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – a disorder where the person is trapped in a pattern of repeated thoughts or behavior

15  Panic Disorder – unexplained feelings of terror

16  Eating Disorders – factors that lead to an obsession with body image which can lead to anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating.

17  Conduct disorder – a pattern of behavior in which the rights of others are violated Ex. Theft, lying, agression

18  Schizophrenia – a mental disorder where the person loses control of what is reality.

19  Personality Disorder – a individual with unique traits or behavior patterns

23 Chapter 9 Lesson 2  Suicide Prevention  Alienation – feeling isolated and separated from everyone else

24 Suicide – the act of intentionally taking one’s own life. Every 13.7 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide. Nearly 1,000,000 people make a suicide attempt every year. 90% of people who die by suicide have a diagnosable and treatable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death. Most people with mental illness do not die by suicide.

45 The Dash by Linda Ellis  I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone, from the beginning…to the end.  He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.  For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth. And now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.  For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.  So, think about this long and hard. Are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real and always try to understand the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile, remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash… would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent YOUR dash?

50 Continued…  At one point in most peoples lives, they will experience a loss. It is inevitable the longer you live.  How do you deal with a loss?
