What is matter? Atoms are matter. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Elements combine chemically to form compounds. A molecule is the smallest unit of a substance. Compounds=Combination Compounds Atoms

Pure substances A sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound, that has definite chemical properties. Examples: –Water –Gold Click for an example of a pure substance.

Mixtures A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. Examples: –Grape juice. –Earth’s crust Click for pie chart showing a mixture.

The properties of matter Physical properties. Chemical properties. To quiz yourself while studying, make a “T” chart and fill in as many examples as you can for each type of property. T-Chart Example: Physical Chemical

Physical properties Mass Volume Density Melting/ boiling point Strength Hardness Ability to conduct electricity and heat

Chemical properties Reactivity-the ability of a substance to combine chemically with another substance. –Rust Flammability-the ability of a substance to react in the presence of oxygen and burn when exposed to a flame. –Fire
