ATAMSBLAST DIGITAL AGENDA College Writing Marquez April 16, 2012—April 20, 2012 DO NOW: Daily Grammar Exercise (Week 2) *First 10 minutes of each class. California Standards: Reading Standard 2.4: Make warranted and reasonable assertions about the author’s arguments by using elements of the text to defend and clarify interpretations. Reading Standard 2.5: Analyze the author’s implicit and explicit philosophical assumptions and beliefs about a subject. Reading Standard 3.4: Analyze ways in which poets use imagery and figures of speech to evoke reader’s emotions Essential Questions: “How do we, as writers, show the nature of our characters without directly telling our audience?” LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS: Given: The entire class and three stations… the learner will: Expand their creative writing skills by developing original characters for a short story project in April. Students will learn and understand how to create original and complex characters by analyzing famous literary characters (such as Dracula) and examine what makes them ‘complete’. Students will also learn the different archetypes of characters used in literature and will implement them in their own writings. by: Completing the Character Development chart which allows students to ‘build’ an original literary character which will be used in a co-authored short story. Assessment: Character Development Sheet, SAT Vocabulary Test, and SAT essay writings.

Ralph Waldo Emerson Transcendentalist Writer -”from Nature” -”Self-Reliance” Direct Instruction: Monday 4/16 “Shatter Proof” Today we will practice the six thinking strategies used by good readers: predict,picture, relate, monitor, correct, and annotate. Participate in the class reading *Handout will be provided *Answer Thinking and Writing questions and turn in before class ends. Friday 4/13 SAT Writing Prompt Last week, we discussed the true nature of the SAT essay and how they are scored. During direct instruction, we will start writing our own SAT essays, primarily the introductory paragraph. *handout will be provided. Literary Element #3—Form Download the PDF packet from the SAT Prep class website. Today we will examine SAT selections focused on prose, poetry, and drama. Collaborative Station: Wednesday 4/17 Vocabulary Story Development You may work with a partner or on your own. This exercise will allow you to work out those creative writing muscles. With a partner, write a story using the ten vocabulary words. Just in case you were wondering, yes— your story has to make sense. Interpretation Discussion Questions Within your assigned Collaborative group, answer the questions listed on the handout. Be sure to follow the directions carefully. Packet due by Friday, April 20.
