Mechanical Toy Project Justin Andrew McMillan, Joseph Paul Dewey, Matthew Aaron Hoskins

Define Problem To develop a mechanical toy that utilizes cams and/or eccentrics Targeted for children age 3+ and their parents Must meet constraints such as: Must be driven/operated by hand Must have three animated parts included in design Overall dimensions must me no larger than 12”x12”x12” Attractive and colorful- incorporating principles and elements of design https://img1.etsystatic. com/000/0/6567031/il_ fullxfull.337397921.jpg https://img1.etsystatic. com/000/0/6284366/il_ 570xN.251005365.jpg

Generate Concepts There were multiple concept sketches that were considered including Water Boat Toy Water Bucket Toy Snow Bucket Toy Flying Pig Toy Gearbox Toy Wooden Boat Toy After development of the decision matrix, the group came to a decision: Wooden Boat Toy

Develop a Solution The decision matrix was developed to decide on a design The design chosen was the Wooden Boat Toy Parts, working drawing, assemblies, constraints etc. were then developed by the Mechanical Engineer Multiple machines used, such as: 3D printer Table saw Band saw Chop saw

Construct and Test Prototypes All parts were developed on Inventor and working drawings were created The Assembly was developed and a working drawing including an exploded assembly created

Evaluate Solution A motion presentation was made showing the motion of the toy During this presentation, we came across some difficulties: Drive constraints would not work properly The dimensions of certain features were incorrect Certain geometric constraints were off

Present Solution Working Drawing Files were created for all of the parts A Working Drawing File was created for the Assembly including an exploded assembly with a parts list A presentation video was uploaded to YouTube under Matthew Hoskins showing the parts motion

Conclusion To conclude, this project had difficulties that were eventually overcome and had good communication and cooperation between team members, resulting in a successfully produced toy that meets all design constraints and followed all guidelines successfully with equal amount of work and work ethic from all group members.
