3
Plagiarism: The Basics Where does plagiarism’s meaning come from? - the Latin word for ‘kidnapping’ What is plagiarism? - being lazy; copying someone else’s work and claiming it as your own How can you avoid plagiarism? - ask your teacher questions; list all sources; get any needed permission (kidshealth.org)
4
Plagiarism: The Aftermath At school: - ZERO TOLERANCE - failures on papers and in classes In life: - jobs lost - fines of $100 - $50,000 - a year spent in jail (plagiarism.org)
5
Plagiarism: When work is… Cited Author’s name is mentioned, but no information on where to find resources No information about resources is accurate Sites are listed, but no quotations are used for quotes Sources and quotes are used correctly, but no information is original (plagiarism.org)
6
Plagiarism: When work is… NOT Cited Copy + Paste + No references = PLAGIARISM Taking little pieces of work off different websites and mixing them up with NO credit Using your own or a friend’s papers to help write a new paper (plagiarism.org)
7

8
How can words or ideas be stolen? Plagiarism - taking someone’s ideas & using them without giving real owner any credit People plagiarize works in many ways Being lazy and copying an essay for school Downloading a song for a music player Quotes in essays without giving credit Not using quotations (Plagiarism dot ORG)
9
U.S. Copyright Office makes records of facts on specific copyrights Register for a copyright before the term expires Copyright protection lasts a long time (Copyright Kids!) When and how do I register?
10
Social Networking Sites Facebook is taking our personal pictures and comments and saying that they own all of our content Peoples reactions were not good towards Facebook They tried to delete themselves from the site (Youtube-Facebook “We own Your personal Details!!”)
11
Copyright: Why Should I Care? People want credit for their own projects People work hard; don’t want works stolen Reflects appreciation for original creator’s work Controls what people can and can’t do with works (copyrightkids.org)
12
Property that no longer belongs to anyone in specific Allows free exchanging in knowledge Work enters public domain when copyright expires Products are no longer protected under copyright (wikipedia.org)
13
Starts from the beginning (creation) of work Lasts for 70 years after death of creator Anyone can copy/use work without permission after expiration date (copyrightkids.org)
14
Copyright protects “original works of authorship” The following categories included: -literary works -motion pictures -musical works -sound recordings -dramatic works -architectural works -pantomimes and choreographic works -pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works (copyrightkids.org)
15
Who owns the copyright? The author owns the copyright Businesses own protection if you wrote it Joint authors are two or more people All joint authors get the protection You can have written agreements with someone In written agreements the other person has protection (copyrightkids.org)
16
How do I obtain copyright protection? When do you get protection? -immediately after you write it Is it hard? - it is very easy now since you don't have to go through publication, or registration Do you have to inform people? -March 1, 1989 a notice of copyright hasn’t been required (copyrightkids.org)
17
Why is copyright important in Visual Arts? Why must artists have copyright knowledge? -growing developments in "electronic storage, & transmission of images," Artists have rights to their own work They have responsibilities when using others work Important for artists who create images— – painters, illustrators, photographers, designers or art students (Visualartcopyright.com)
18
When do I need permission to copy? The best way to go is to just seek permission for whatever material you copy and "use" (copyrightkids.org) Why is it important in music? The music writers should have the same length of time with copyright protection, but they were only being protected for 60 years after death, which was unfair If the composers work was being protected for 70 years after death, the music writers should have as much protection (youtube – PPL: Fair Play on Musicians – A Letter to the Prime Minister)
19
Fair Use is… what allows some access to copyrighted material, as long as only the original writers/artists/authors profit from the work. …what allows some access to copyrighted material, as long as only the original writers/artists/authors profit from the work.(englishhistory.net)
